چکیده

We present a method to constrain the injection spectrum of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (CRs) from supposedly identified extragalactic sources, which can be applied even when only one or two events per source are observed, and is more efficient than a simple fit of the CR energy spectrum including only the contribution of all identified sources. The method is based on the analysis of the probability for a given source to populate different energy bins, depending on the actual CR injection spectral index. In particular, we show that for a typical source density of 4 × 10 Mpc, a data set of 100 events above 6× 10 eV allows one in 97% of the cases to distinguish a source spectrum dN/dE ∝ E from one with E at 95% confidence level. The GZK horizon and constraints on the cosmic ray source spectrum from observations in the GZK regime

We discuss the GZK horizon of protons and present a method to constrain the injection spectrum of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) from supposedly identified extragalactic sources. This method can be applied even when only one or two events per source are observed and is based on the analysis of the probability for a given source to populate different energy bins, depending on the actual C...

Electroweak instantons as a solution to the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray puzzle

We propose a scenario in which a simple power-like primary spectrum for protons with sources at cosmological distances leads to a quantitative description of all the details of the observed cosmic ray spectrum for energies from 10 17 eV to 10 21 eV. As usual, the ultrahigh energy protons with energies above E GZK ≈ 4 · 10 19 eV loose a large fraction of their energies by the photoproduction of ...

Observation of the GZK Cutoff by the HiRes Experiment

The High Resolution Fly’s Eye (HiRes) experiment has observed the GZK cutoff. HiRes’ measurement of the flux of cosmic rays shows a sharp suppression at an energy of 6×10 eV, exactly the expected cutoff energy. We observe the “ankle” of the cosmic ray spectrum as well, at an energy of 4× 10 eV. However we cannot claim to observe the third spectral feature of the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray regi...

Simulation study of GZK photon fluxes

The composition of ultra-high energy (UHE) cosmic rays E > 10 eV is still unknown. The observation of UHE photons would extend the observed electromagnetic spectrum to highest energy and open a new channel for multimessenger observations in the universe. Current limits on the photon flux already constrain “exotic” scenarios where a large number of photons is expected by the decay products of su...

TeV String Theories, Mini Black Holes and Trans-GZK Cosmic Rays

The existence of cosmic rays transcending the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) cutoff appear to be a fact of life. While there is still some controversy regarding the observational data, it appears that opinions converge toward acknowledging the existence of trans-GZK events. Clearly, the issue will be satisfactorily clarified once future detectors, such as OWL, EUSO, the Pierre Auger Observatory,...
